While we look ahead of lives better than us, how many of them might have looked at us from behind? While we make choices among our wants, how many of them out there are striving hard to fulfill there basic needs? In such a journey of finding such souls need in need RACUOCFMF was fortunate enough to come across this village named Kindagalla in the Bibile area of the Uva Province, Monaragala district. We who believe strongly that the world becomes a better place by taking care of one another, not limiting this to one or two around us extended our helping hand to 42+ families of the village. Project ‘Gamwardhanaya’ comprising three phases was all about this life standard elevation of the villagers which was made into reality with the blissful generosity of Mitsubishi Corporation, to whom the villages and also we the Rotaractors are forever grateful of.

The thirst of those people under the burning sun could be felt in a glance and the initiative of quenching those thirst was Phase 1 of the project named “Diyawara”. Spotlighting the SGD goal 06 Clean Water and Sanitation and the 3rd Rotary Focus Area of “Water and Sanitation”, construction of the well, the pump house, and the water tank structure were built which was the biggest part of the project. The thankfulness exhibited by the villagers to God through the Dewa Danaya indeed showered immense happiness and satisfaction upon us too which is all that is expected as a return of all the hard work, dedication, and sacrifice.

The phase 2 of the project “Gamwardanaya” was named “Nanawara” which focused on developing and refurbishing the village school, Naagala Sri Piyarathana Kanishtha Vidyalaya. As the very first step of it, the exterior of the eight buildings of the school was painted by our own Rotaract members who was called the professional painters after the project. The walls of the school had slept a while under the dust, ready to awaken the day it was polished clean with the colors of the paint giving it a brand-new look. This phase also included some donations such as sport equipment, carpets, chairs and tables for the computer lab and the library of the school, enabling the students to gain the highest benefits from the facilities they deserve to have. The students at the school also did not have any musical instruments for their own use. However, surprisingly we saw how the amazing children had won several music competitions with the borrowed musical instruments from their neighboring schools. This made the next step in our donations to include a few musical instruments such as a surpina, violins and flutes. Through phase “Nanawara”, I hope we were able to be a reason though we were not the product.

The third and the last phase of Gamwardanaya was “Mehewara” which comprised of 5 sub projects covering the rotary focus areas. Covering the rotary focus area of Maternal health and Childcare RACUOCFMF was able to donate goody packs which included dry rations and baby products, to 25 pregnant women in the village. In line with the focus area of economic development we were able to provide a group of villagers with equipment such as sewing machines, masonry tools used in masonry work and fishing rods which would pave their path in creating their own employment opportunity for themselves. A medical camp was also conducted after the discussion with the relevant medical officers in order to spread awareness of the disease called “Anemia” which was significantly observed among the villagers. This project was conducted in accordance with our focus area of disease prevention. We also grew plants and made the outdoors of the school pleasant and clean in covering up the rotary focus area of protecting the environment. The rotary focus area of peace and conflict management was covered by the implementation of a registered society with the involvement of a few villagers to maintain, clean and perform the daily procedures such as paying the electricity bill of the water system that was implemented under the phase one of project Gamwardanaya.

With the support and commitment of all our members and to mention the hand of Mitsubishi corporation who provided immense support in achieving the great success of Project Gamwardanaya we were able to change the lives of a group of well-deserved people. We would like to express our gratitude and thanks to your organization for taking the time and energy to invest in our vision and in our project; your sponsorship was integral to our ability to serve our community and to improve the quality of life for all. Together, we are helping to make a positive and lasting difference in the lives of so many we know and we cannot succeed without the generosity of supporters like you. With the commitment and passion of are lovely Rotaractors and such organizations, projects such as Gamwardhanaya will continue to serve the community to its maximum and also definitely would remain for us as one of the most remarkable projects of the club.
