International Women’s Day (IWD) is more than just a date on the calendar, it’s a powerful reminder of the ongoing journey toward gender equality. Celebrated annually on March 8, IWD provides an opportunity to reflect on the remarkable achievements of women worldwide and to consider how each of us can contribute to advancing equality. In 2025, the theme is “Accelerate Action”.Around the world, communities mark this day with various events that highlight both progress and the work still needed. For instance, in Midland, Michigan, a “Unite and Resist” rally is scheduled outside the Midland County Courthouse. This event aims to address challenges related to press freedom, marriage equality, healthcare, and more, featuring speakers like Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet. Whether it’s marked by rallies, community events, or simple gestures like gifting flowers (like the yellow mimosas in Italy), the day reminds us of both the progress made and the work that still lies ahead.
International Women’s Day is more than a celebration, it’s a call powerful to action. Beyond the festivities, it urges communities, organizations, and governments to take bold steps toward gender equality. It’s a reminder that while we honor the progress made, we must also address the challenges that still hold women back. For example, many campaigns and events on this day focus on pushing for policy reforms, raising awareness about issues like gender-based violence.
As we celebrate International Women’s Day today, let us honor the courageous women of the past whose determination and bravery paved the way for the rights and freedoms we enjoy today. Let’s use this day to reflect on our shared responsibility in promoting gender equality and take real steps to support and empower one another. On March 8, and every day, let’s remember that when women rise, our world rises too.
