Gold- SISU SAVIYA (Rotaract Club of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University)

Sisu Saviya is a project which was implemented by the Rotaract club of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (RAC KDU) had the aim of uplifting the education levels of school children. They selected Kudalunaka Vidyalaya, Yalwela, Mahiyanganaya and executed the project in three phases.

The second phase included the donation of prefect badges which would encourage and motivate the students of Kudalunaka Vidyalaya to take lead and become accountable future leaders. Few fun-filled group activities were also organized to enhance the leadership skills of the newly appointed prefects. Furthermore, a workshop was conducted on the importance of higher education in order to make them aware of the positive effects of higher education.

Finally, RAC KDU introduced the game of chess to the students since chess deepens focus, exercises the brain, enhances creativity and increases problem-solving skills. The third phase also included the donation of sports equipment with the aim of bringing the unrecognized talents to the light.

Bronze – ECHO FOR ECO 2.0 (RAC Colombo Uptown and RAC Colombo West)

Echo for Eco is an initiative and aspiration of Rotaract Club of Colombo Uptown, Rotaract Club of Colombo West, and the Interact Club of St. Peter’s College to address the issue of global warming due to the burning of fossil fuels which causes the greenhouse effect in earth’s atmosphere for the second consecutive year. The project took place in two phases.

Phase 1 – Echo Quiz
Echo quiz consisted of two rounds; the first round took place on Quizizz, while the second round took place as a traditional verbal quiz on Zoom. Furthermore, questions were based on the Sustainable Development Goals to facilitate awareness of the sustainable development goals relating to environmental protection and conservation.

Phase 2 – Coral Restoration at the Seenigama Coral Reef
The second phase of the project was restoring corals at the Seenigama coral reef, which has historically depleted due to coral mining activities. The clubs partnered with “Dive for Good” for this part of the initiative, which provided the required technical expertise. Moreover, representatives from the clubs witnessed the coral restoration process by snorkelling in the reef. Coral restoration included the growth of corals in land-based or ocean nurseries for restoration, degraded reefs, and transplant corals to substrate stabilization structures after ship groundings or dynamite fishing.

Thank you to all our fellow clubs and fellow Rotaractors for providing us with the details. Stay tuned for the third article of this novel series!
