“Unengaged sponsor sinks the ship”
– Angela Waner –

Stakeholders are people who are interested and can influence the performance of any organization. Nowadays, the environment we deal with is increasingly complex and competitive. In this situation, external stakeholders play a vital role, and their active engagement in the activities is critical. As branches of the Rotaract movement, each club has a responsibility to execute programs to encourage external stakeholders to actively engage as partners in an initiative. The 32nd Rotaract District Training Assembly highlighted three such outstanding projects under the category of “External Stakeholder Branding Partnership for an Initiative” that had a profound effect on the corporate world.

Silver – Zooxanthellae – Rotaract Club of  University of Moratuwa

Zooxanthellae is an innovative project carried out by the Rotaractors at the University of Moratuwa. The main purpose of this project was to protect coral reefs. The initial project idea was to plant baby corals on the sea bed, mounted on the structures because it is a potential way of rehabilitating the coral colonies. As most of the employment opportunities in the Southern region of Sri Lanka are associated with the fishing and tourism industries, planting corals in such a needy area had a massive socio-economic impact.

In 2018, baby corals mounted on steel structures were deposited in Jungle Beach, Rumassala, and in 2021 with the financial contribution of Mitsubishi Corporation and partnering with Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA),  they took a step forward and deposited 40 steel structures with baby corals in Mirissa Beach, Matara. Due to various benefits materials used for structures were changed from steel to concrete.

In January 2022 deployment of these concrete structures was taken place and after that with the help of Rotaractors and marine scientists from the MEPA transplantation of the baby corals on those structures was done. An awareness session was conducted with the locals at the Bandaramulla Temple, Mirissa about the conservation of baby corals in the long run.

Bronze – Jumpstart – Rotaract Club of Achievers Lanka Business School

Jumpstart is a signature project initiated by the Rotaract Club of Achievers Lanka Business School to provide opportunities for aspiring Sri Lankan entrepreneurs to Jumpstart their business journey and for students at Achievers Lanka Business School to get their first taste of the corporate sector. Jumpstart 2020 was held under the following three headings, with the subject “INITIATE. ELEVATE. TRIUMPH.”

* Pitch it, Win it
* Shark Tank
* Board Room Challenge

Pitch it, Win it
Idea wizards and early-stage entrepreneurs used the portal “Pitch it, Win it!” to present their business ideas to a panel of judges. Participants in this category was either individuals or teams with an early-stage startup business idea. A final score that includes 50% of the results from the first round and 50% of the grand final was used to determine the winners. The finalists were given a series of seminars by judges and business professionals to assist them to get ready for the finals.

Shart Tank
This was a straightforward finale that took the form of a networking event, allowing growth-stage startups to network with potential investors from a variety of business sectors who might be interested in offering them investments in exchange for a return of equity in their companies. Participants in this category were either individuals or teams with a growing company. The businesses were evaluated on grounds such as feasibility, growth, and return on investment. The participants also gained expert advice for their businesses and created long-lasting contacts with investors.

Board Room Challenge
This was a chance to learn more about the business world and gain experience in preparation for their case study exams at the higher levels of their studies that is only available to CIMA and ACCA students of Achievers Lanka Business School. Students were required to conduct research on critical elements of the business, such as operations and finance, and present their findings in front of a panel of judges along with a thorough report.
