Spick and span

Project Spick and Span was a clean-up project of the management faculty area of our university. It was held during the morning hours on the 26th of April, with a participation of around 25 people. This was mainly aimed at cleaning up the ‘Mandawa’, a place at University of Colombo, Faculty of Management and Finance where many students gather around, and the surrounding area to destroy places that can breed dengue mosquitoes. Plastic, polythene, and other items which can collect water were collected and disposed. Furthermore, fallen leaves around the Mandawa were swept and disposed.

Our university is not only a place of learning but also a home away from home for thousands of students. Recognizing the importance of maintaining a clean and safe environment, a remarkable project was undertaken to clean the surrounding areas of our university and combat the menace of dengue. This initiative aimed to create a healthier, more vibrant campus while raising awareness about the dangers of dengue and instilling a sense of responsibility among the university community

Sadly, one of the 3rd year students of the faculty of management and finance passed away last month after getting infected from dengue. Hence, this project was done to prevent losing the innocent lives of our brothers and sisters in the faculty. Thereby, with the help and resources of the PHI in the area, chemicals to destroy dengue mosquitoes were sprayed in the drains of the faculty premises.

Overall the project was carried out smoothly. However, we did have to face some challenges with regard to getting the chemical gases to destroy dengue mosquitoes. Initially, we were not able to get permission from the management faculty to spray the gas during the time of the project, as there are students in the lecture hall and it would be harmful for them. We acted accordingly and changed the plans. Thereby, on the day of the project, only the chemicals to the drains were sprayed and on the day after the project, when the students had gone from the lecture hall area, the chemical gases were sprayed in the faculty.

The project was very helpful for project ‘Hade Veena’ which was a musical show held on the following day at the faculty premises. Hence the audience of that event was able to enjoy the evening in a clean environment free from mosquito bites.

The project to clean the surroundings of our university and combat dengue has been a resounding success. Through collaborative efforts, the campus has been transformed into a clean, vibrant, and dengue-free space that fosters a sense of pride and well-being. This initiative serves as a testament to the power of collective action, raising awareness, and instilling a sense of responsibility. As we move forward, let us continue to prioritize cleanliness, sustainability, and public health, ensuring a brighter future for our university and the communities we serve.
