The first step of the art competition was to define the criteria for participation and the submission rules including specifying the theme of the competition and other guidelines that artists must follow. Therefore, the competition was open for mainly school, university students and the public based on two main categories which were hand-drawn paintings and digital art. Also, had 3 main age categories at the school level which were primary, junior and senior. As this is a continuation of the project “One Earth”, the theme was related to the environment. Hence, the ‘Thelithuda’ art competition was driven under the theme of “Vision of Nature – Positive World” which means a demonstration of visions, of positive aspects of a future dream world, built with environmental beauty while preserving nature.

Once the rules were established, the competition was promoted through several channels, such as social media and letters. 40 invitation letters were distributed to schools both in the Colombo district and out of the Colombo district and shared posts through social media providing guidelines and all the relevant information. The 12 days of a submission period allowed for entries which started from the 8th of May to the 20th of May 2023.

Participants’ details and digital art were collected through a Google form and used mail for collecting hand-drawing paints. About 150 paintings were received through the mail.

After the submission deadline was passed, entries were judged by Mr. Rohan Uggoda, Teacher Adviser (Art) in Colombo Education Zone he reviewed the paintings, and Mr. Sanjana Wanigasekara reviewed the digital arts. Over 150 participants registered for the competition and after evaluations, a final 37 winners were selected by judges including both categories based on the criteria established for the competition.

Thelithuda art competition wrapped with a grand awarding ceremony which was organised by joining together with FMF Blog for awarding prizes to both ‘Thelithuda’ and ‘wordsville’ winners. All the winners were notified and invited to the awarding ceremony, which was held on the 28th of May from 2 pm to 4 pm at the East Wing Auditorium of the University of Colombo Faculty of Management and Finance.

Thelithuda art competition and its awarding ceremony were a testament to the creativity and talent that exists within the community.
