“Your little effort can give others a second chance to live life”

First aid is a life-saving technique. Taking immediate action and using the appropriate techniques while waiting for professional assistance can significantly reduce death and injury, as well as the impact of disasters and everyday emergencies. That is why we believe that First aid is a humanitarian action that everyone should have access to. For example, in the absence of oxygen, the brain expires in about 6 minutes. To help a person in such crises, first aid knowledge is crucial. Furthermore, our body’s most crucial fluids, blood is necessary for its proper operation. Blood loss can lead to fatal diseases and even death, if it is excessive. Thus, it is clear how giving blood physically saves lives and benefits individuals and binds people, despite differences in caste, creed, religion, and other categories.

The International Service avenue of RACUOCFMF, came up with the idea of saving lives through providing a basic first aid learning and a blood donation campaign. Project REVIVE ’22 was a joint initiative by the Rotaract Clubs of Mumbai Wadala East (District 3141), India and University of Colombo Faculty of Management and Finance (District 3220), Sri Lanka under the International Service Avenue. The project was conducted as a physical event by both clubs in their own country in the month of September 2022. This was implemented to commemorate The International First Aid Day, which is celebrated on the 10th of September with the aim of spreading the importance of lifelong first aid learning. Project “Revive ’22” was conducted under two phases namely,  a basic first aid training session and a blood donation campaign.

We conducted the first phase of project REVIVE’ 22 on the 11th of September 2022 between 9:00 am to 3:00 pm in the Faculty of Management and Finance premises of University of Colombo. It was a first aid training workshop, which was a physical event open for everyone. We had around 35 participants for the workshop. The main aim of this phase of the project was to give out the basic first aid knowledge and skills that will be needed in an emergency situation. The workshop was conducted by a team of 4 certified trainers from St. John Ambulance Service. The workshop started around 9.30 am with a quick icebreaking activity done by one of the directors of IS avenue. This helped to warm up the participants and to make them ready to learn a lot about first aid. Continuing that, Mr. Sarath Dayananda, the lead trainer started the workshop. The session mainly included training on Emergency Resuscitations, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, CPR Training, Basic requirements in an Emergency (ABC), Recovery Positions, Triangular Bandaging Methods. Practical sessions were conducted after each topic with the use of dummies and props for the participants to clearly get an idea of how things are done in an emergency situation. Slide shows along with pictures and videos were also shown to the participants to provide a better understanding on the topics.

Phase two of REVIVE ’22 was a blood donation campaign. It was held on the 13th of September at the National Transfusions Blood Centre from 9.00am to 3.00 pm. We had around 13 donors who visited our campaign. Once the donors filled the necessary paperwork, they were examined by doctors to check if they are eligible to donate blood. One pint of blood (around 450ml) was taken from each donor. We provided a cup of milk, a banana and a piece of cake to each donor after their donation of blood.

Rotaract Club of Mumbai Wadala East conducted their blood donation camp in Mumbai, India on 17th of September. The donation camp was held from 10 am to 5 pm at the Imax Theatre, Mumbai. They had around 50-52 participants in their blood donation camp. They had their blood donation camp on the day of their Prime Minister’s Birthday which was a monumental occasion. They were able to collect 52 bottles of blood through their camp.

With the conclusion of these two phases, Project REVIVE brought to a close its arduous journey and left us with a wealth of learnings, experiences, emotions, and satisfaction that we will never forget. We were able to have an impact on people’s lives by educating people about first aid and encouraging blood donation to the community.
