Honoured & Sealed – Most Outstanding Community Service Initiatives – Disease Prevention and Treatment

All of us out there started the year 2020 with the goal to accomplish the goals we had already set in 2019 and then 2020 be like, “here.. hold my Corona”. The pandemic is now a part of our daily lives and in fact, has become the NEW NORMAL. Ever wondered what Rotaractors before the pandemic did in terms of disease prevention? If so sit back, relax and have a good read.

At present, the spread of chronic diseases has become one of the escalating threats faced by the population across the world. The rotary movement holds Disease Prevention and Treatment as one of its major rotary missions which tends to educate and support people in fighting against global diseases. Rotaract takes up the responsibility in helping one another live healthy, in whatever ways it can, for Happiness is the reflection of Good Health. Hence, the following three projects were recognized to be exceptional under the category of “Disease Prevention and Treatment”.

Gold – Kindred kidneys

Rotaract Club of Alumni of University of Moratuwa together with Rotaract Club of Kairós Xalapa (District 4185) introduced the project ‘Kindred Kidneys’ with the goal of increasing awareness regarding Chronic Kidney Disease back in 2019. Samastha Lanka Kidney Patients Association also joined hands to initiate the project locally.

Rotaract Club of Alexandria Sporting (District 2451), Rotaract Club de Kairos Xapala (District 4185) and Rotaract Santa Cruz (Distrito 4690) took part in launching ‘Kindred Kidneys’ internationally. These clubs were able to conduct awareness sessions and donate equipment for hospitals that are necessary for dialysis treatment.

Silver – Say NO to Dengue

The Rotaract Club of SLIIT executed the project “SAY NO TO DENGUE” by collaborating with the National Dengue Control Program, which is led by the MOH office, Kaduwela. The main aim of this initiative was to bring awareness and address the rapid increase in the death rate due to the dengue fever caused mainly because of the negligence of people.

The project was held at Hokandara, where the teams of Rotaractors inspected the selected areas simultaneously.  By the end of the program, the teams were able to inspect 200 houses of which 50 houses were found to have the threat of dengue mosquitoes. 13 houses were given red notices where they had larvae in their premises.

Even though they had to confront many difficulties and challenges during the inspection, they did not fail to give their best and in fact, their effort towards this massive project is highly appreciable.

Bronze – Healing Hands

“Healing Hands 2020”, a medical camp organized by the Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa was a subproject of “Grama Prabodhaya”. This project was indeed a showcase of the True Definition of Caring. The Rotaractors of the Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa have put their hands together to help the society in the best way they can to overcome the challenges of “kidney-related diseases” in Sri Lanka.

The tasks of Diabetics testing, kidney disease screening, and general health screening were carried out at the selected venue, Dunupothagama Vidyalaya, Nochchiyagama, Anuradhapura with the assistance of 12 volunteering medical officers and with a crew of 28 Rotaractors. Ceylon Biscuits Limited sponsored this valuable project and helped in distributing the refreshments and in addition, a pharmacy unit was located to give away the prescribed medicine free of charge to the villagers with the motive of enriching the value of this good cause.

Indicating the achievement of project objectives, the participation of over 100 villagers had been noticed despite all the challenges they faced during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hats off to those incredible teams and clubs behind these successful projects who came forward to bring into light the major issues faced by communities while devoting their time and effort greatly in helping the needy regardless of all the trouble and challenges they had to go through.
