Dive Against Debris

‘Dive Against Debris’ is an initiative by the Rotaract Clubs of Faculty of Law, University of Colombo, Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, Faculty of Science, University of Colombo, Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo and University of Colombo, Faculty of Management and Finance. The first phase of the project was the beach cleanup along with the snorkeling session which was led by the Rotaract Club of University of Colombo, Faculty of Medicine.

කොළඹ විශ්වවිද්‍යාලයේ නීති පීඨයේ, වෛද්‍ය පීඨයේ, කලා පීඨයේ, සහ කළමනාකරණ හා මූල්‍ය පීඨයේ රොටරැක්ට් සමාජයන් එක්වී කොළඹ විශ්ව විද්‍යාලයේ වෛද්‍ය පීඨයේ රොටරැක්ට් සමාජයේ මූලිකත්වය යටතේ ‘Dive Against Debris’ ව්‍යාපෘතියේ පළමු අදියරය වන මුහුදු වෙරළ සුද්ධ පවිත්‍ර කිරීම හා ස්නොකල් ආධාරයෙන් කිමිදීම සාර්ථකව සිදු කළහ.
දුම්රිය ප්‍රමාදය, පුද්ගලයන් අතුරුදහන්වීම් සාමාන්‍යයෙන් ගැටලූ වුව ද මෙහිදී ඒවා හමුවේ කලබල නොවී එක්ව විසඳා බහුතරය විසින් විනෝදයට පමණක් සීමා කළ මුහුද ඉන් ඔබ්බට දකිමින් එය සංරක්ෂණය කිරීමෙහිලා අත්වැල් බැඳගත් මෙම රොට්රැක්ට් සමාජ සාර්ථකව යළි පැමිණියේ සිත තුළ පිරුණු තෘප්තියත්, කවදත් නොමැකෙන මතක ගොන්නක් ද පොදි බැඳගෙනය.

‘Dive Against Debris’ என்பது கொழும்பு பல்கலைக்கழக சட்ட பீடம், கொழும்பு பல்கலைக்கழக மருத்துவ பீடம், கொழும்பு பல்கலைக்கழக கலை பீடம், கொழும்பு பல்கலைக்கழக மேலாண்மை மற்றும் நிதி பீடம் ஆகியவற்றின் ரோட்டராக்ட் கழகங்களின் முயற்சியாகும்.  இந்த திட்டத்தின் முதல் கட்டமாக ஸ்நோர்கெலிங் அமர்வுடன் கடற்கரையை சுத்தப்படுத்துவது கொழும்பு பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் மருத்துவ பீட ரோட்ராக்ட் கழகத்தினால் ஏற்பாடு செய்யப்பட்டது.

நாங்கள், FMF ரோட்ராக்ட்டர்கள் கடற்கரையை சுத்தம் செய்வதில் மனிதவளத்துடன் ஆதரவளிப்பதாக உறுதியளித்தோம். காலை 9.30 மணியளவில் நாங்கள் கடற்கரையை சென்றடைந்தோம். எந்தெந்த வகை குப்பைகளை சேகரிக்க வேண்டும், அதை எப்படிச் செய்ய வேண்டும் என்று மருத்துவ பீடத்தின் ரோட்டராக்டர்களால் எங்களுக்கு வழிகாட்டப்பட்டது.  கடற்கரையை சுத்தம் செய்வதற்கு அதிக நேரம் எடுக்கவில்லை, ஆனால் சிறந்த பகுதியாக ஸ்நோர்கெலிங் பயிற்சி இருந்தது, இது வாழ்நாள் முழுவதும் மறக்க முடியாத ஒரு அற்புதமான அனுபவமாக இருந்தது. குறுகிய காலத்திற்குள் இத்தகைய அற்புதமான முயற்சியை முன்னெடுத்த ஏற்பாட்டுக் குழுவிற்கு நன்றியைத் தெரிவித்துக் கொள்கிறோம்.

We, FMFers promised to support the initiative with manpower in the beach cleanup. After planning all the necessary the day that everyone was looking forward to arrived. We were asked to come to the station at around 5.15 a.m but the train was not so kind enough to arrive at the time it was supposed to which was at around 6.05 a.m. To some of the Rotaractors this journey could be considered as a special one too, since it was their first-ever train ride and they were like “apita oneh aluth train ekak, parana train ekakanum yanna ba please”. Luckily or unluckily the train we got onboard was an old train which was supposed to be an express train where we later found out that it stopped at almost every station till we reached our destination. The one question that almost everyone complained about during the ride was “what is the exact difference between a 2nd class and a 3rd class ticket?”.

We were able to arrive at our destination around 9.30 a.m. and to break your curiosity it was such a beautiful beach not because of the foreigners but because it was a beach with ‘ehen mehen’ garbage which we were supposed to collect. We were guided by the Rotaractors of the Faculty of Medicine on how to get things going as per plan. The beach cleanup did not take much time but the snorkeling did. And let us tell you that it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to cherish forever.

The snorkeling session was a wonderful experience for all of us as we were able to see what others couldn’t. An initial training was given to the ones who went on this thrilling ride. We literally had nothing to do but just hang on to a tube filled with air where the instructor took us to the deeper sea. As it was a great experience, it did also give us goosebumps as well. At one particular moment, everyone was looking for Illyas who went snorkeling with the trainer. PD boy and ES boy screamed, “Guys Illyas ille.” If you know the struggle he made along with our boss, you won’t be surprised about the above statement.

We spent hours and hours in the sea. Some of them had promised their parents that they would not even touch the water. Cheers to them as they kept their promise, but the ones who wet their trousers know the real story. (Meh lunu tika velunama mata gedara yanna puluwan shape eke)

Jokes apart, all of us were so grateful to be back on physical Rotaract after spending almost half a year on virtual platforms. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the volunteers, the project chairs, and the committee for pulling out such an amazing initiative within a short span of time.
