Ride Colombo: Sri Lanka’s First and Largest Women-Exclusive Bicycle Parade

On March 8th, International Women’s Day, the streets of Colombo transformed into a vibrant display of strength, unity, and freedom as Ride Colombo took place. More than just an event, Ride Colombo was a movement—a powerful statement that Sri Lanka is a safe travel destination and that women in tourism deserve better opportunities. With every pedal, women from different backgrounds came together to show courage, independence, and boundless possibilities.

This groundbreaking event was organized by Across Ceylon, Feel Lanka, and the Leo Club of the University of Colombo Science Faculty, under the Community Service Avenue of the Rotaract Club of the Faculty of Management and Finance, University of Colombo. The project was led by Rtr. Senumi Herath and Rtr. Ushanth Jayakumar, with Rtr. Rakshalini and Rtr. Diluxy as co-chairs, while Rtr. Senumee and Rtr. Ushanth oversaw the project from the Rotaract Club’s side. The main goal was to showcase Sri Lanka as a safe travel destination while empowering women in the tourism industry. All funds collected from the event were dedicated to providing training, education, and career guidance for women who aspire to work in tourism. Through the support of Uva Wellassa University’s Tourism Department, two young women were selected and, on the event day itself, were gifted two bicycles to help them in their journey. Additionally, Across Ceylon and Feel Lanka committed to offering education, financial support, and marketing assistance to help them build a sustainable future.

To ensure the success of Ride Colombo, an extensive PR and promotional campaign was executed, reaching both local and international audiences. The organizing team engaged with some of Colombo’s most well-known hotels, including Cinnamon, Ramada, and Viveka City Hotel, encouraging foreign travelers and tourists to join the cause. A major highlight of the promotional efforts was attending the second ODI cricket match, where the team actively interacted with fans, spreading awareness about the event while enjoying the electric atmosphere. Additional promotional activities took place in Sri Lanka’s southern coastal areas, where organizers directly engaged with foreign tourists, encouraging them to be part of the movement. The campaign also included media briefings and office drives, ensuring that the event received widespread attention and participation. Thanks to these efforts, Ride Colombo attracted over 150 participants, including international cyclists from India, Malaysia, Maldives, Indonesia, and more.

As the sun rose over Galle Face Green, the excitement was palpable. Registrations began at 6:00 AM, welcoming women from all walks of life, each one carrying the spirit of empowerment within them. Before setting off, Mr. Rajitha from the Ride Colombo team conducted a detailed safety and route briefing, ensuring a smooth and secure journey for all. At 8:00 AM, the parade officially began, turning the streets of Colombo into a sea of cyclists, their energy and enthusiasm radiating throughout the city. As they reached the final destination, they were greeted with refreshments to re-energize after the exhilarating ride. The celebration continued with a high-energy Zumba session, where participants danced and laughed together, celebrating not just the event but the spirit of unity and empowerment. This was followed by an award ceremony, recognizing the dedication and participation of the cyclists. The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks at 12:00 PM, marking the end of an unforgettable day—but not the end of the journey.

Ride Colombo was more than just a parade. It was a place of support and progress, where every pedal stroke symbolized a step toward a more inclusive and empowered future. This event proved that when women come together, they can create waves of change. එකිනෙකට වෙන්ස් වූ පසුබිම් සහිත කාන්තාවන් ඔවුන්ගේ ධෛර්‍ය, ස්වාධීනත්වය සහ අසීමිත හැකියාවන් විදහා දක්වන්නට මෙම අවස්ථාව සමඟ එක්වී සිටියහ.

කොළඹ විශ්වවිද්‍යාලයේ කළමණාකරන සහ මූල්‍ය පීඨයේ රොට්රැක්ට් සමාජයේ ප්‍රජා සේවා අංශය යටතේ ( community service avenue) Across Ceylon, Feel Srilanka සහ කොළඹ විශ්වවිද්‍යාලීය විද්‍යා පීඨයේ ලියෝ සමාජයේ සහභාගීත්වයෙන් මෙම පෙරළිකාර අංගය සංවිධානය කරන ලදී. මෙම ව්‍යාපෘතිය මෙහෙයවනු ලැබූවේ රොට්රැක් සාමාජික සෙනුමි හේරත් සහ උශාන්ත් ජයකුමාර් සමඟින් සම සභාපතිවරුන් ලෙස රොට්‍ රැක් සාමාජික රක්ෂාලිනි සහ ඩිලුක්සි විසිනි. සංචාරක කර්මාන්තය තුළ කාන්තාවන් සවිබලගැන්වීම සමඟින් ශ්‍රීලංකාව ආරක්ශිත ගමනාන්තයක් බව ප්‍රදර්ශනය කිරීම Ride Colombo ව්‍යාපෘතියෙහි ප්‍රධාන අරමුණ විය.
