Independence Day

Before arising as an independent nation, Sri Lanka was a colony under different nations, such as the Portuguese, Dutch and British, since 1505. Among them, British was the longest and most influential. With the struggles people had to face with time, our ancestors began to demand self-rule, political rights and freedom from foreign controls.

Sri Lanka gained independence on 4th February 1948. However, it was not a violent revolution; it was achieved through peaceful political struggle. The country became a self-governing dominion, marking the end of nearly 450 years of colonial rule. D. S. Senanayake became the first Prime Minister. With that, Sri Lanka could govern itself; laws and policies were made by local leaders and national identity began to strengthen.

After independence, Sri Lanka regained pride in its own culture and traditions. Local languages, customs, and national symbols became more important in shaping the country’s identity.

Independence also ensured freedom of religion, allowing all communities to practise their beliefs peacefully and celebrate religious festivals with pride At the same time, self-rule helped Sri Lanka focus on national development, education, and unity while making its own decisions as an independent nation.

This year Sri Lanka celebrates 78 years of independence on 4th February under the theme “Rebuilding Sri Lanka”. The main event will take place at Independence Square in Colombo, focusing on national unity, progress, and economic recovery. Independence is not only freedom from colonial rule but also responsibility, unity and respect. National Independence Day gives a message on national harmony, integrity and respect among all ethnic and religious communities. It encourages us to protect the country’s heritage, contribute to national development and uphold democratic values.

Let us honour the sacrifices of our past and work together to build a peaceful and prosperous Sri Lanka.
