World Meteorological Day

World Meteorological Day is celebrated every year on 23rd March. It marks the establishment of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in 1950, which is responsible for studying weather, climate, and water across the world.

Weather is something we often ignore, but it actually affects everything in our daily life. Whether it’s planning your day, going to work or university, farming, fishing, or even traveling. All of it depends on weather conditions. Without proper weather forecasting, life would be much more difficult and unsafe.

This day is also important because it reminds us about climate change. Nowadays, we see unpredictable weather patterns like sudden rain, heatwaves, floods, and storms more often than before. That’s why meteorology has become very important in protecting people and reducing disaster risks.

On this day, different countries organize awareness programs and events to highlight the importance of weather and climate science. Each year also comes with a theme announced by the World Meteorological Organization, and the theme for 2026 is “Observing Today, Protecting Tomorrow,” which focuses on strengthening weather and climate observations to better protect lives and prepare for future climate risks.

In short, World Meteorological Day reminds us that weather is not just background information. It directly impacts our lives, safety and future.
