International Equal Pay Day

International Equal Pay Day is observed every year on 18 September to raise awareness about the importance of equal pay for work of equal value. This serves to draw attention to the rights of women to be treated fairly and equally in the workplace, addressing the unequal differences that, still exist today. It serves as a reminder to employers, governments and society that all of us – regardless of gender – deserve equal opportunities for fair incomes.

There are many variables that can affect the gender pay gap, including differing access to employment opportunities in general, career progression, educational backgrounds and leadership positions. Women may also experience problems associated with unpaid care work and discrimination in employment. These forces, when combined with otherwise similar skills and qualifications to their male counterparts, can hinder women’s earnings, as well as different genotype from their long-term financial security.

Equal pay is a vital part of successful families, businesses and economies. Implementing fair wages can enhance independence through financial self-sufficiency, thus enabling the influx of a larger labor force and lowering levels of poverty. Workplaces that employee equal pay and fair opportunity are also pieces of workplaces federal government is looking forward to building as well.

International Equal Pay Day is a stark reminder that pay equity is still a work in progress. Governments can strengthen laws and policies and employers can review pay structures and provide equal opportunities for career advancement. Societies working together to eliminate unfair pay differences can make progress toward work environments where people are paid fairly for the value of their work.
