International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

On October 17th, we observe the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, when the world comes together to recognize and address the urgent need to end poverty. This year’s theme is “Decent Work and Social Protection: Putting Dignity in Practice for All.” Poverty is a global problem. It means not having enough money to meet basic needs like food, shelter, and education. It affects millions of people around the world, depriving them of a decent life. Using 2017 prices, the new worldwide poverty level was established at $2.15. Therefore, it is considered to be extreme poverty for someone to make less than $2.15 each day. In 2019, there were approximately 648 million persons in this condition worldwide.Poverty has far-reaching effects. It limits opportunities, denies access to healthcare and education, and can lead to hunger and homelessness. Poverty also hinders economic growth and social development. The lack of resources and income necessary to support sustainable livelihoods is only one aspect of poverty. It shows itself as poverty and malnutrition, restricted access to fundamental services like education and healthcare, social isolation and discrimination, and a lack of participation in decision-making.

Recovering from poverty requires a multi-faceted approach. Commonly there are eight things we should do to overcome poverty step by step. Children’s education, supplying pristine water, ensuring that everyone has access to basic healthcare, enabling a woman or a girl, better nutrition for children, supporting environmental initiatives, reaching out to kids experiencing conflict, and abolishing child marriage.Celebrating the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is essential because it reminds us of the urgency to address poverty. It’s a call to action for governments, organizations, and individuals to work together to eradicate poverty and ensure that everyone can live with dignity. The theme “Putting Dignity in Practice for All” emphasizes the importance of decent work and social protection for upholding human dignity, addressing poverty, and providing opportunities for dignified lives, especially in vulnerable situations. Poverty is a global challenge, but by promoting decent work and social protection, we can put dignity into practice for all. The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is a time to reflect on the importance of this mission and take steps to make a world without poverty a reality.
