International Day for the Eradication of Poverty: A Day to Listen, A Day to Act

Have you ever skipped a meal because you were too busy?

Now imagine skipping a meal not because you’re busy, but because there is no food at all.

That small exchange hit me hard, and it’s the reality for millions of people across the world. On October 17th, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, we are reminded that poverty is not just about numbers in a report but about real lives, real struggles, and real dreams waiting to be fulfilled.

Often, poverty remains undetected. It’s the child walking to school without breakfast, the farmer working tirelessly yet barely making ends meet, or the family choosing between medicine and dinner. On this day, the world comes together to say no one should have to live like this.

But here’s the thing: this day is not only about sympathy. It’s about solidarity. A young girl once told me, “I thought I was helping them, but in truth they were teaching me about strength, hope, and resilience.” That’s the power of listening to those who experience poverty. Their voices lead the way to real change.

Eradicating poverty is not just governments’ work or charities’ mission. It‘s something we can all be part of. Supporting fair trade, reducing waste, mentoring someone, or even raising awareness – every action counts. As the saying goes, “Little drops of water make the mighty ocean.”

So today, let’s pause. Let’s remember that while poverty divides, compassion unites. Let’s dream of a world where no one has to go to bed hungry, where children study with bright lamps instead of fading candles, and where dignity is not a privilege but a right.
