United Nations Day – 24th Oct

Did you know that the United Nations oversees, declares and designates most of the international days, holidays, weeks, years and decades, though this is carried out by the member countries individually upon specific observances as well? But how many of you know that there is also a special day celebrated as United Nations Day? United Nations Day is celebrated on the 24th of October every year. This is celebrated to mark the anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945.

United Nations Day has been celebrated since 1948 and was also recommended as a public holiday by the UN General Assembly in 1971, via Resolution 2872. This special day highlights the global mission to maintain international peace and security. This day also promotes awareness towards protecting human rights and social progress, fostering cooperation, providing a forum and promoting sustainable development goals as well.

On this day, celebrations happen in global level in UN member countries. Many countries hold meetings, exhibits, cultural shows and conduct educational programs about the UN. Headquarters events often feature special international concerts or discussions on the organization’s goals. The day is used to inform the public about past achievements and ongoing global challenges like poverty and climate action too.

At present, the UN has 193 member countries. All these countries hold equal representation with one vote each. It is noted that at present the UN officially observes 218 international days that are designated via General Assembly resolutions and specialised agencies like UNESCO and WHO. These dates serve as advocacy tools to mobilise resources, raise global awareness and promote specific organisational objectives. Annually, UN Day is celebrated, highlighting different themes. Likewise, this year for 2026, the United Nations has designated 2026 as the observation year for three major international themes: the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development, the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists and the International Year of the Woman Farmer.

The Official theme for the year 2026 at the 81st United Nations General Assembly session is “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.” Over the years, when we look back the journey of the United Nations, only a single country cannot achieve the target or solve the largest challenges alone in the world. From Climate change to conflict, the ideals of the UN Charter peace, human rights and development. These are just as vital today as they were in 1945. On United Nations Day, let us remember that the future is not built by division, but when we, the peoples, choose to stand and act as one.
