Bitter Truth

This is a story about our neighbors, Leela and Janagan. They were an elderly couple who lived happily, loving each other. I never saw them fight or scream at each other. One day, Leela struggled to breathe, so we rushed her to the nearest hospital. The doctor checked her pulse and informed us that she had passed away. I was worried because she was kind to everyone and Janagan grandpa hadn’t left her side for a second. How could he live without her? Many questions arose in my mind.

Time passed, and I saw Janagan grandpa sitting outside, reading the newspaper. I felt a pang of emotion because when Leela grandma was alive, he’d read the newspaper while she chewed betel leaves. I started chatting with him and suddenly asked, “I saw you at her funeral and you didn’t cry. Not even a drop of a tear came. How can you control it that much?” He smiled at me and said, “Why should I? When she was alive, I gave her my love, took good care of her and showed her how much I loved her. She accepted me for who I was. My child, no one is permanent in your life. Love the person when they’re with you because once they’re gone, you can’t stop them. And after they’re gone, there’s no point showing your love. I treated her like a queen, and now she’s gone. But one thing I’m sure of – she’d feel satisfied about our relationship.”

I finally got the answer to my question: “No one is permanent in life, so love them when they’re alive.”

No matter how much our parents do for us, we often don’t express our love to them directly. Friends, the time they spend with us is temporary. So let’s show them love and fulfill their wishes while we can.
