“Here’s to strong women, may we be them, may we know them and may we raise them”
‘BOSS’ under the avenue of Community Service is an initiative on women empowerment to educate and strengthen the potentials of future lady bosses. The second phase of BOSS was held on the 24th of January from 12.30 p.m. onwards at the faculty premises. This phase was mainly an interactive session with a deep insight into the issues we women face on a regular basis. The project was chaired by Rtr. Randila Karunathilake and Rtr. Sachinthani Abeyasekera with the intention of unveiling the hidden potentials we lady bosses have. Rotaractors and Non – Rotaractors were both invited as there are no boundaries or limits to spread awareness regarding women empowerment whatsoever.
The project commenced with a brief introduction to the topic given by Rtr. Randila Karunthilake. One of the main questions asked was “Who comes to our mind when we think of Bosses? Barack Obama? Vladimir Putin? Why not Margaret Thatcher, Theresa May or Aung San Suu Kyi?” Thereby, a detailed discussion began where Ms. Naushalya Rajapakshe, Attorney-at-Law from the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo, shared her valuable thoughts and concerns about the prevailing issues we women face. This session was conducted by Rtr. Achini Dayarathne in a manner where we raised questions and issues we had and Ms. Naushalya answered them. It was very interactive and inspiring as all the participants were much involved with the awareness it created.
After discussing some weighted and heavy topics it was time to ease our mind and to display the creative abilities deep rooted within us. White T-shirts were provided to each participant and they were asked to paint their thoughts of women empowerment onto it. At the end of the day their creations were worn proudly by each of them and displayed in a fashion show. They walked with confidence as changed and empowered women. Like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly, the transformation was visible for all in the smiles on their faces.
After the T-shirt designing session, officials from Oriflame educated the girls on the proper way of grooming themselves and how best to apply make up. Some useful fashion tips along with a live demonstration of make up application was presented by Ms. Thilini Lelwala, Area Sales Manager of Oriflame, and all those present gained some much needed make up tips especially as we will one day walk our paths in the professional world.
The day ended on a bright note and all the ladies were inspired, empowered with a strengthened perspective of power and freedom. This project not only made a difference in the mind set of our ladies but also provided the message that when women support each other incredible things do happen.
