In this episode, we talk honestly and deeply with a leader whose journey shows how to be flexible, passionate, and grow Rtr. Thilakshila Dayananda talks to past president Yasiru Athugaldura Arachchi. This interview takes us through Yasiru’s personal journey, his time with Rotaract, and the lessons he’s learned along the way, using a mix of humor, honesty and reflection.
1. What three words would you use to describe yourself?
Yasiru says that he is on time, spontaneous, and happy, which are three traits that affect both his personal life and how he leads. He also gives us a peek into his personality outside of work. Yasiru lives a life that balances structure and freedom. He likes anime and has learned that he works best late at night. He also talks about how much he likes playing musical instruments, even though he doesn’t think he’s very good at them. This shows that he’s open to trying new things and having fun.
2.How did you get started with Rotaract?
Yasiru’s journey into Rotaract started during the pandemic, when a lot of people were looking for ways to stay active and connected. At first, he just wanted to use his time wisely, but soon it became a real commitment.
He became more involved through community service projects, where he found a real passion for making a difference. This passion eventually pushed him to take on leadership roles, where he could make a bigger difference and help others in the movement.
3.What problems did you have to deal with as a leader?
Yasiru talks openly about the problems he faced as a club president. He had to deal with a lot of stress, like following university rules, working with members, and managing expectations. He stresses how important it is to keep the team in a positive and supportive environment, even though these problems are difficult. His experience shows that being a leader is more than just getting things done; it’s also about getting to know people and making a place where everyone can do their best work.
