“Clothes for Souls” is a community service project jointly carried out by the Rotaract Clubs of the University of Colombo Faculty of Management and Finance, University of Peradeniya, Nallur Heritage, Badulla and Rathnapura.
With the aim of bringing joy to as many people as possible all around the country, our club embarked upon this journey by assigning five collection points in five different districts representing the participant clubs. The RACUOCFMF was the collection point in the Colombo district. The other collection points were at the Uva-Wellassa University, University of Peradeniya Senate premises and Rich Look premises in Rathnapura.
Rotaractors from all participant clubs were largely involved in spreading awareness about the project mainly through social media and word of mouth recommendation. The RACUOCFMF collection officially commended on the 4th of February and continued till the 8th of February.
The collection points were a treat to watch as they were fueled by generosity and love. Surpassing our expectations, more and more people turned up with their own lavish share of gently used clothing and shoes. Even after collections officially ended, we had to re-open our doors to the late yet enthusiastic donors.
Following all collections started the tedious yet interesting task of sorting and packing. This was undoubtedly one of the most memorable milestones of this journey as everyone felt like being submerged in a small sea of clothes of all kinds starting from 1-year old baby shirts and socks to beautiful cotton saris and dashing men’s shirts. By this point, we knew we were going to delight many souls.
With the aim of lifting the “Awurudu” spirits of those in need of our support, it was decided to implement the distribution mainly in April. However, we started it off early by visiting the “Haven and Sunshine” home in Borella (A home for young girls who have been sexually abused) on the 23rd of February. On the 9th of April we visited both the Marcsri Home Kalutara (A home for differently-abled men and women of every age) and the Gunasekara Child Development center in Nawala. The smiles we saw on their faces were priceless and reminded us of the saying; “Clothes mean nothing until someone lives in them.”
The final distribution of clothing was sent out on the 18th of April to a community in need in Haputale along with the support of our fellow Rotaractors from the University of Peradeniya.
We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to our kind donors without whom we wouldn’t have been able to serve an exciting platter of joy to a deserving part of our community this “Awurudu” season. This project indeed reflected our motto, “Team work makes the dream work” while shedding light on the age old saying, “We can only make a living by what we get but make a life by what we give.”
