Honoured & Sealed – Best Covid 19 Response Initiatives

“We are in this together and we will get through this together….”

The Rotaract Movement has constantly focused on encouraging young Rotaractors to adopt and be courageous in facing unanticipated challenges. A brief note about 2020 cannot certainly be created without Covid 19, a virus spread resulted in a global pandemic which has already affected more than 200 countries and has killed nearly 1.39 Million lives in just one year. Since the very beginning of the pandemic, Rotaract has got hold of initiatives not only to educate people but also to support the thriving communities to fight back. Especially in a developing country like Sri Lanka with the lack of proper awareness and financial stability, Rotaract has undoubtedly played a major role. The 30th Rotaract District Assembly brought to light two such great initiatives under the category of “Best Covid 19 Response Initiatives”, which created a major impact on our community.

Best Relief Response Initiative

Gold – Covid 19 Relief ( RAC Hatton Kotagala)

Due to the unfortunate pandemic that hit Sri Lanka in early March, people all over the country were greatly affected, especially, the Estate based families who earned a very low income suffered in carrying out their daily chores.

Continuing with hands wide open for the needy, Rotaract Club of Hatton-Kotagala along with few volunteer bodies of the area, have been fortunate to distribute dry rations during these challenging times for 450 families, who depend on Estate Sector. The project was initiated on 1st of April 2020 and followed to fulfill the need of 450 families across a few estates, giving priority to single parents and widows.

Best Health Response Initiative

Gold – Sathkara (RAC Alumni of University of Moratuwa)

‘Sathkara’ is a project initiated by the Rotaract Club of Alumni of University of Moratuwa with an aim of healing the wounded and helping the needy. This year the project focused on serving the frontline heroes who were fighting against COVID-19. The project took place in two phases.

Phase 1

The first phase was initiated in the Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital where they were able to fund 125,000LKR worth of PPE kits, goggles, and face masks.

Phase 2

The second phase was at the General Hospital of Kegalle where they were able to fund 75,000LKR worth of PPE kits.

This worthy cause was possible through the immense support from the project donors. Alumni members from different countries also came forward to support this worthy cause. Through ‘Sathkara’ 2020, they were able to immensely support the frontline heroes who were saving our own people. As one would say, Helping to save people is same as helping to save the country”.

Great applause to the minds behind these projects and the friends in action for planning and executing these projects successfully. As Rotaractors, we certainly do hold the responsibility to bring forward more social-awareness projects like these to save and protect our nation. “Power of unity” was indeed the greatest lesson the COVID 19 Pandemic has taught us once again to gravitate ourselves towards STRIVING AS ONE!

Thank you to all our fellow Clubs and fellow Rotaractors for providing us with the details!
