Every year on November 25, we commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The United Nations created this day in 1999 to draw attention to the pervasive problem of violence against women and girls. The phrase “violence against women” refers to a variety of damaging actions that are specifically targeted at women due to their gender. Sexual violence, such as assault or harassment, and physical violence, such as beatings or strikes, might fall under this category. But psychological abuse, such as threats, domineering conduct, and excluding women from friends or family, is just as much a part of violence against women as physical assault.Violence occurs in a variety of settings, such as homes, workplaces, and educational institutions. These problems impact women of all ages, races, and origins and are present both during times of war and peace. One in three women globally have been victims of physical or sexual assault at some point in their lives, according to UN figures. This is a concerning figure that demonstrates the extent of the issue. Beyond the immediate pain that women experience, violence against them has long-term consequences. Serious health issues, such as injuries, mental health conditions, and even death, can result from violence. It has an impact on women’s self-esteem and restricts their participation in community life, employment, and education. It is difficult for many women who are victims of violence to get the support they require because they feel alone and are scared to speak up. Women who experience domestic violence, for instance, might not be able to function properly at work or might have to quit, which has an impact on the economy.Young girls’ exposure to violence can have a negative effect on their mental health and negatively influence how they interact with others in the future. In this sense, families, communities, and entire nations are impacted by violence against women. Increasing awareness is among the most crucial actions. Education can inspire individuals to speak out against violence against women and help them realize how terrible it is. This entails teaching men and women, particularly the younger generation, the value of women’s rights and the importance of showing compassion and understanding to others. In order to help women leave abusive circumstances, support services including shelters, counselling, and legal aid are essential. Women and girls can receive the assistance they require in safe areas without feeling ashamed or afraid. Women can also be empowered to be independent and defend themselves against financial abuse by establishing job possibilities and guaranteeing equitable access to resources. We are all reminded of the pressing need to eradicate violence against women and girls on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. It is a day to remember the struggles that many women encounter, to celebrate the resilience of survivors, and to pledge to work towards a time when no one has to live in fear or violence. A world where women are treated with equality, decency, and respect may be created by cooperating, educating ourselves, and helping one another. This is a brighter future for everyone, not just women.
