Each year, 12th August is marked as International Youth Day to honour the contribution made by youth to society. The United Nations created this concept back in 1999, while the first International Youth Day was held in 2000. This day celebrates the successes, problems and opportunities that youth have while promoting investment in their development.
The youth form the backbone for making advancements in social, economic and technological areas of society. Their new perspectives, innovations and creativity have helped shape the future positively. The current generation of youth is engaged in various fields like education, business ventures, environmental conservation, technology, sports and community services. They have an active role to play in advocating peace and sustainability in society.
But many young people still have difficulties that need to be addressed. Problems like unemployment, poor quality of education, mental health problems, poverty, discrimination and effects of climate change might hinder the development of youth. Young people also often lack equal opportunities for their future and participation in decision-making procedures. Solving the problem requires the cooperation of governments, educational establishments and private enterprises.
Education is one of the best ways that can help young people to empower themselves. Education helps young people to acquire knowledge and skills, which help them become confident and prepare for their future. Besides education, other things like leadership skills, vocational skills and access to technology offer young people the chance to make positive contributions to society.
Celebrations for International Youth Day are held through seminars, workshops, awareness campaigns, cultural activities, sports events, volunteering and discussion about topics concerning young people. Various educational institutions, NGOs and governments come up with initiatives in order to motivate young people to be responsible leaders and responsible citizens. The United Nations identifies a unique theme each year related to one major issue that young people have to deal with across the world.
The youth contribution is vital for the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Young people are highly involved in the advocacy for good education, gender equality, decent jobs, innovation, climate change and peaceful societies. Their energy, determination and creativity make the youth useful allies in creating sustainable communities and addressing world issues.
Additionally, youths have become more engaged than ever in tackling global challenges by engaging in social media campaigns, environmental activism, entrepreneurship and community development initiatives. They employ digital technology to spread awareness, disseminate information and network with individuals across the globe to make a difference in their lives. A number of young people volunteer their time to assist disadvantaged communities in the field of education, environment, health and wellness. Societies stand to gain immensely from new ideas and solutions by fostering youth involvement in decision-making and leadership roles.
Leadership development and participation of young people as active citizens is another essential element of International Youth Day. Young people learn through education, volunteering, sports and other community projects many useful skills, including teamwork, communication, problem solving and critical thinking. These skills make them ready to deal with various challenges in the future. It is vital for governments, educational institutions and nongovernmental organisations to keep creating those conditions which would make youth feel empowered, use their abilities and join decision-making processes. With proper guidance and resources, youth become an effective factor of social progress.
