Kawum, also known as oil cake, is a traditional Sri Lankan sweet with a long history, especially during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. Made from rice flour, jaggery, and coconut milk, it is deep-fried until golden brown. Kawum has a crispy outside and a soft, sweet inside with a rich caramel-like flavor from the jaggery.
It is slightly chewy and has a mild coconut taste, making it a delicious and festive treat enjoyed with tea or during celebrations.
