Today, on the 1st of October, Sri Lanka joins hands to celebrate something truly precious, our children. Children’s Day is more than just a date on the calendar; it’s a beautiful reminder of the joy, innocence and boundless potential that every child brings into our lives. World Children’s Day is observed globally on November 20th, the date the United Nations adopted the Declaration and Convention on the Rights of the Child. However, many countries celebrate it on their own chosen dates and Sri Lanka celebrates Children’s Day on October 1st, a day dedicated to honouring children, raising awareness about their rights and reaffirming our commitment to their well being and happiness. Wherever and whenever it’s celebrated, the core message remains the same: every child deserves love, protection, education and the freedom to dream. In our fast-paced, adult driven world, Children’s Day serves as a gentle yet powerful reminder that children are our future. Today’s little ones will become tomorrow’s leaders, teachers, doctors, artists and innovators and how we nurture them today shapes the world we’ll live in tomorrow. It also reminds us that every child deserves a voice, that childhood should be free from fear, labour and neglect and that childhood is fleeting. In the rush of daily life, we often forget to simply enjoy our children, so this day encourages us to slow down, play, laugh and cherish these irreplaceable years.
There’s something magical about the way children see the world. A cardboard box becomes a spaceship. A puddle becomes an ocean. A simple question like “Why is the sky blue?” opens the door to wonder. Children teach us to find joy in the smallest things, to forgive quickly, to laugh without hesitation and to love without conditions. Their honesty is refreshing, their curiosity is contagious and their resilience is inspiring. In many ways, children are not just learning from us, we are learning from them. This is why celebrating them matters so much. You don’t need grand gestures to make Children’s Day special. You can simply spend quality time together by putting away your phone, getting on the floor and playing with your child, because nothing means more to them than your undivided attention. Listen to them and ask about their dreams, fears and favourite things, really listen, without interrupting or judging. Read a story together, as books spark imagination and create lasting memories. Do something creative like drawing, painting, baking or building something together, because messy fun is the best fun. Give back by donating to a children’s charity, volunteering at a local shelter or supporting an organisation that helps underprivileged children. And finally, write them a letter telling your child how much they mean to you and how proud you are of them, they’ll treasure it forever.

As we celebrate Children’s Day today, let’s do more than just wish the children in our lives a “Happy Children’s Day.” Let’s make a promise to protect their innocence, to nurture their dreams, to stand up for their rights and to create a world where every child feels safe, values and loved. Because when we invest in our children, we invest in a brighter future for all of us. To every child reading this and to the child in every adult’s heart, Happy Children’s Day! May your laughter never fade and your dreams never stop soaring.
