The Brunching Series 2.0 – Episode 2 – Yarl Eat House

As part of the Benchmark: The Brunching Series, an initiative by the Rotaract Club of the University of Colombo’s Faculty of Management and Finance, our members recently embarked on a flavorful journey to explore some of Colombo’s standout dining spots. The series kicked off with a visit to the popular Yarl Eat House, located on Wellawatta Station Road. This eatery is known for its authentic Northern Sri Lankan Street food and its straightforward charm. At first glance, Yarl Eat House appears to be a simple establishment, featuring metal tables, plastic chairs, and a casual atmosphere that reflects its street food origins. However, once the banana leaf is placed on the table, the meal becomes anything but ordinary. The standard lunch includes a generous serving of rice accompanied by three vegetable curries, typically consisting of dhal, a tangy sambar, and a rotating third option. Even for vegetarians, this meal is hearty and comforting. However, you might want to request a little extra to ensure you have enough to satisfy your hunger.

What truly sets Yarl apart is its diverse selection of meat and seafood sides, served in small metal bowls. Options include mutton, prawn, cuttlefish, chicken, and the famously rich crab, all of which add a burst of spice and flavor to the meal. The mutton is particularly tender and well seasoned, while the crab although slightly pricier is a must try for those seeking something indulgent. While the chicken can be a bit bony, the other sides more than make up for it, offering a satisfying mix of textures and heat. Every bite captures the essence of Jaffna style cooking bold, fiery, and deeply satisfying.Despite the heat from the spices and the lively lunchtime crowd, the atmosphere is still welcoming. The staff, especially the long serving server who knows exactly what each customer needs, adds a personal touch to the dining experience. The service is quick and efficient, which is expected from a place that experiences a steady stream of hungry patrons every day.

Even with a few extra side dishes, meals remain affordable, typically ranging from around Rs. 500 to Rs. 1000, depending on your appetite. It’s easy to understand why regular customers keep returning not just for the food but also for the comfort of familiarity and the satisfying flavors. Yarl Eat House doesn’t attempt to impress with fancy décor or fine dining sophistication. Instead, it captures hearts with its authenticity, generosity, and vibrant spices that linger long after the last bite.
