Pages to Pixels: Promoting Literacy in the Digital Era

“Can you imagine living in a world reading a simple signboard or sending a message online feels impossible? Sadly, this is the reality for millions of people today.”

Every year on September 8th, the world celebrates International Literacy Day to remind us power of education and knowledge. In 2025, the theme “Promoting literacy in the digital era” highlights how literacy has evolved in a world influenced by technology.

“A smartphone or computer is more than a gadget – it’s a gateway to knowledge.”

In the past, being literate meant only the ability to read and write. While this still essential, today’s reality demands much more. In a world filled with technology, we also need digital literacy. Digital literacy means more than just knowing how to type or scroll. It involves finding information online, thinking critically, communicate effectively online and using technology for learning and growth. These skills are now as important as traditional reading and writing, because they open doors to education, employment, and active participation in society.

“Yet, the digital world is not equally accessible to everyone.”

While the digital age creates more opportunities, it also increases the gap between those who have access and those who do not. Many people especially in rural areas and developing countries, still struggle with poor internet connections and lack of resources for digital education. UNESCO estimates over 770 million adults worldwide literate, are many more struggle with digital tools. This creates a “digital gap” where some groups move forward quickly, while others risk being left behind. Promoting literacy in digital era therefore means ensuring equal access and opportunities for all.

“Every small effort counts.”

As youth and undergraduates, we have a unique role in bridging this gap. Simple actions like helping friends or family learn to use digital tools, supporting community training programs, or promoting safe online practices can make significant difference. Every effort brings someone closer to confidence in both reading and digital technology.

“From pages to pixels, every step matters.”

International Literacy Day 2025 remind us that literacy today more than reading and writing it is about equality, empowerment and opportunity. By promoting digital literacy alongside traditional learning, we can build a world where knowledge is accessible to all, and no one is left behind.

“The future belongs to those who can read, learn, and navigate both books and technology”

Together we can help millions moves confidently from pages to pixels, embracing the digital era without leaving anyone behind. Education, awareness, and access to technology are the keys to a more literate and empowered world.

Literacy is more than letters on pages. It is the light that guides people out of poverty, ignorance, and inequality. By spreading literacy, both traditional and digital, we are giving individuals the tools to dream, grow, and transform their lives, while creating a society where knowledge truly empowers everyone.
