The Skills Employers Want in 2026 – SDG 08

“The world is smaller, the stage is bigger, and the competition is 24/7” is a statement that I strongly believe in at present. The reason behind this is that innovation is the baseline today, and if you want to stand out today, you must do more than just show up; you must evolve. It is obvious that in the past, it was all about having an academic qualification, maybe a bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree, to be recruited for a specific job. But now the situation is completely different because, though educational qualifications matter, education alone seems not to be sufficient.

The contemporary world in which we are living today is completely bound by competition among individuals in every aspect of life. No matter whether it’s the corporate and job world, education and achievements, or personal development, everything has simply become competitive. At present, we are living in the 21st century, which is largely driven by new technology, innovations, and artificial intelligence as well. The ideal expectations of the 21st century have shifted from rote specialisations and academic paper qualifications to prioritising adaptability, technological proficiency, and human-oriented soft skills. This simply means that degree qualifications alone are not sufficient to perform in the present world; instead, individuals are required to develop extra skills and talents to support their education and career.

Sometimes this may sound weird, making readers wonder why skills outweigh academic qualifications; it’s because the world has become even more competitive than was expected. In the past, there were situations where people didn’t have sufficient exposure to the value of education, the corporate world, and career prospects; this was due to reasons such as a lack of communication, socialisation, and the fact that technology was not well-developed at the time. However, today people have ample routes to gather information and explore various opportunities through social media sites, etc. The more people started exploring the world, the more awareness was created among them to engage in education, business, and jobs, which paved the way to a more competitive era.

Looking into the most prominent skills that employers and recruiters want in 2026 when hiring candidates for employment opportunities, they expect an ideal candidate to have good communication and public speaking skills with language fluency, adaptability to artificial intelligence, problem-solving and analytical thinking skills, teamwork and coordination, and proficiency in the field of ICT. This comprises skill sets such as knowledge of programming languages, video editing skills, digital literacy, marketing skills, HR skills, writing skills, the ability to use AI tools, leadership and organisational skills, etc.

To make this clearer, let me give an example: let’s take a situation where a company receives about 500 resumes for a particular job position. Among those 500 resumes with the same expected academic background, the resume with additional qualifications in terms of technical and soft skills, as well as active participation in extracurricular activities, stands out. So here, the skills that we possess play a vital role in being selected for the job vacancy. Therefore, every individual needs to be a multi-talented person possessing a lot of skills. Nowadays, individuals have numerous options at the university level to develop a positive personality and identity for themselves by participating in a variety of extracurricular activities at clubs and societies alongside academics.

Hence, from my point of view, I would encourage readers to stay updated on the present world to identify what is expected of individuals to perform well in society; therefore, beyond academics, let us develop life skills that empower us to lead a better life.
