In an inspiring effort to merge health awareness with social responsibility, Rotaract Club of University of Colombo Faculty of Management and Finance, launched an innovative two-phase community service initiative titled Fitness Expo. Rooted in the values of service and impact, this project blossomed into a powerful testament to how student-led efforts can touch lives in meaningful ways. Phase One: Varsity Voices
The first phase of the Fitness Expo kicked off with an engaging interview session in collaboration with the Amalgamated Club of the University of Colombo. It focused on spreading awareness about physical wellness and the importance of maintaining a balanced lifestyle amidst academic and social commitments. This included an interactive session where we got to know the board of the Amalgamated Club more.
Phase Two: පුංචි FITNESS – Where Fitness Meets Charity
The true heartbeat of the initiative emerged during Phase Two: an impactful donation drive that blended fitness with giving back. It all started with a simple yet effective idea; a fundraiser through the sale of uniquely designed Fitness Expo t-shirts. The campaign not only promoted the spirit of wellness but also mobilized funds for a deeper cause.
With the proceeds from the t-shirt fundraiser, the club embarked on පුංචි FITNESS (Punchi Fitness), a heartfelt outreach project dedicated to supporting the young learners at St. James School, Moodara; a school with limited resources but limitless potential. Changing Lives Through Sport and Study
The donation drive was carefully curated to meet the real needs of the students. Essential stationery items and a range of sports equipment were handed over to the primary school children. These resources, often taken for granted in well-funded institutions, opened up new pathways for the students. It opened paths paved with opportunity, curiosity, and joy. But the visit was not just about handing over supplies. The Rotaractors brought energy, fun, and mentorship into the school grounds through a vibrant sports session. The students were introduced to games like badminton, chess, cricket, and basketball. Some of the students for the very first time. Laughter echoed as rackets swung, pawns moved, and balls bounced across courts and fields.
These moments weren’t just play, they were windows into a world where each child could dream beyond their circumstances. By integrating sports into the school day, the initiative fostered both physical and cognitive growth, inspiring students to excel in academics and athletics alike. Small Steps, Big Change
Punchi Fitness didn’t just leave behind equipment and notebooks; it left behind a message: “You matter. You are seen. And you are capable.” The project served as a stepping stone for these young minds, giving them the tools and encouragement to pursue their talents with confidence. Many of the students expressed newfound interest in sports and showed enthusiasm to participate in extracurricular learning. The Rotaract Club of Management and Finance has always stood for meaningful, lasting change and through Fitness Expo, we didn’t just complete a project; we ignited a wave of hope, empowerment, and opportunity that will echo in young lives for years to come.
