Lifelong Learning in a Rapidly Changing World – SDG 04

What if I start with a question like this and be completely honest with yourself wherever you are reading this piece. How many of you think that learning stops just after you finish school or university? Many of us spend our time grasping book-based knowledge, memorising theories, chapters and concepts like a bookworm just to pass exams and secure better grades. But is that truly what learning is? Let’s be honest, the moment we start our educational journey, we run to schools, tuition classes and seminars, constantly burying our heads in books. We memorise, mug up, study and practice, all for the sole purpose of getting better grades and entering the high school, college or university we’ve always dreamed of. Isn’t that right?

Honestly, this sometimes makes sense because of the fact that the contemporary world is competitive and everyone is purely evaluated based only on the grades and marks they score. If you ask me, I too was chasing books for the best marks and better grades. Sometimes it is not our fault, but rather the prevailing circumstances. But do you think that is the only time we learn? To be honest, it is not. Every one of us keeps on learning throughout our lives in this rapidly changing world.

Moreover, every day is a brand-new day and we learn about a lot of things in life. To begin with, we learn about people and society. As individuals in different phases of life, we meet new people, build connections, expand our networks and eventually have to share our lives with others. We get to learn the reality of people when we travel with them: their attitudes, characteristics, perhaps a few positive key takeaways and some negativity that should be left behind. Everyone we meet ends up either forming meaningful, lifelong connections or remaining just a chapter in our lives. Because the world constantly changes and comprises different generations, such as Millennials, Gen Z, Gen X and Gen Alpha, people have different mindsets and behave accordingly. Therefore, individuals are also supposed to adapt to various changes in present society.

Moving on, when it comes to present market trends and technological improvements, they have evolved drastically. Day by day, we encounter the latest trends, innovations and devices and we are supposed to stay updated. We must learn what the current market is like, what kind of new arrivals there are and what sorts of changes are taking place. If we fail to learn and stay updated, we might not be a perfect fit to live in society, as we risk seeming outdated.

Furthermore, beyond learning about people or the present day world, individuals, both men and women, move through different phases of life. To put it simply, let’s take an average individual: initially a kid, then a teenager, then a youth, next an adult and eventually a family person. Once married, they take on the role of a wife or husband, then a mother or father and this is how roles keep changing. At every stage of life, we get to learn through various experiences what should be avoided and what is useful.

To conclude, life is all about everyday learning, a simple lifelong journey where we learn about many things. rather than leading a purely theoretical life, it is about the practical knowledge and experiences we gain. To understand how things around us work, every single experience we go through, every little instance we are in and every person we meet matter the most in this rapidly changing environment.
