Sevanagala Visit

Education is the cornerstone of progress and empowerment, providing individuals with the tools and knowledge to shape their own futures. However, many schools in rural areas often face significant challenges due to limited resources and infrastructure. Recognizing the importance of bridging this gap, the Rotary Club of Colombo Mid Town, along with the “Ex HNB Friends” and the Rotaract Clubs of Colombo Mid Town, University of Colombo Faculty of Management and Finance, and Achievers Lanka Business School, joined forces to make a lasting impact on Somadevi Maha Vidyalaya in Sevanagala.

Somadevi National School has been a pillar of the Sevanagala community since its establishment in 1969. Despite facing various socioeconomic challenges, the school has served over 1300 students, providing primary and secondary education. Over the years, it has achieved remarkable success, producing numerous students who have gone on to pursue higher education at universities. The school has also excelled in sports activities, showcasing the resilience and talent of its students.

However, Somadevi Maha Vidyalaya has struggled with limited resources and facilities, especially when compared to schools in urban areas. Recognizing the need to provide better opportunities for the students, the school identified the importance of the English language and recently constructed an English Language Lab. This lab aimed to enhance the language and communication skills of the students, enabling them to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.

On the 25th of November, a van filled with the donated multimedia equipment and furniture set off for Somadevi Maha Vidyalaya. Accompanied by Rotarians and Rotaractors from the various clubs, the team arrived at the school, ready to make a difference. During a special school assembly, the furniture and equipment were officially handed over to the school principal, marking a significant milestone in the partnership.

The impact of the donations became evident as the smart board in the English Library came to life. Rtr. Ovin Bimsara, a dedicated member of the Rotaract Club, conducted a fun session with the primary students, utilizing the interactive technology to engage and educate them. The session aimed to not only enhance their language skills but also instill values of responsibility and citizenship, under the topic “Little Minds, Strong Values.”

By investing in education, the Rotary Club of Colombo Mid Town and the Rotaract Clubs have empowered the students of Somadevi Maha Vidyalaya to dream bigger and reach higher. Through their collective efforts, they have taken a significant step towards creating a brighter future for the students of Sevanagala and paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable education system.
