It started on a quiet evening at my tuition center. Our English teacher was late and the hallway was very still. As I stood outside with my mother, I turned and saw him. He was wearing a white t-shirt, looking away into the distance. He didn’t even glance at me, but in that moment, my heart chose him.
They say we often fall for the people who don’t notice us and that is exactly what happened. For the rest of our time at tuition, my love was a secret. It was hard because he was friendly with every other girl but stayed distant from me. It made me feel frustrated and a little jealous, but when you love someone, you feel you have a right to be a little protective of your heart.
Then, things changed suddenly. When we started Grade 12, he stopped coming to English class. He was the only reason I felt happy to go to tuition and without him, everything felt like a dark cloud. I found out he had switched to the Mathematics stream and didn’t need the class anymore. I finished those classes feeling empty, with only his memories to keep me company.
Because I had to take care of my future, I started the ACCA professional course. At that time, I was just going through the motions. I followed the course without any real interest or passion. I felt numb. I couldn’t feel the environment around me, the air felt thin and I didn’t feel the love of others. I had no idea what was going to happen next in my life; I was just drifting.
But then, the world suddenly changed. On a completely ordinary day, I saw him on the street.
In that exact second, I could feel the air and the environment again. It was as if my senses had finally woken up. I felt like I was being born again into a new world. My mind raced – I wanted to scold him for leaving without a goodbye, but instead, I just smiled.
To my surprise, he smiled back. He took me to a cafe, and we talked for so long that I lost track of time. It felt like a gentle rain finally falling on a dry garden. We started talking on the phone and eventually, I told him how I felt.
He was very honest with me. He said, “This is who I am. I can get angry sometimes, but if I love someone, I will never cheat them.” He told me to take my time to think, but I didn’t need any time. We became a couple, bound by a pure love.
In my life, I never experienced my father hugging me or speaking to me with affection. But the way he cares for me now fills that void with true happiness. People say first loves don’t last, but ours has become something incredibly stable. I look at him now and realize that our story isn’t just a chapter; it is the whole book. We are a mystery that grows more beautiful with time, leaving everyone to wonder how a love so young became so unbreakable. I don’t need to look for happiness anymore, because I am already holding it. I will love him with all my heart, through every rising sun and every falling star, until my very last breath.
