World Heart Day is celebrated every year on 29 September to increase awareness about the significance of keeping your heart healthy and encouraging people across the globe to look after their heart. The heart is one of the most vital organs in the human body that keeps pumping blood, oxygen and nutrients to different parts of the body. Despite the advancement in the medical field, heart problems still constitute one of the major causes of death in the world today. Hence, World Heart Day plays an important role in enlightening people about heart diseases, risks, prevention and how to keep a healthy lifestyle.
Cardiovascular diseases consist of ailments of the heart and arteries such as coronary heart disease, heart attack, stroke and heart failure. According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular diseases are responsible for millions of deaths each year in the world. A lot of these deaths are linked to preventable or modifiable risk factors. Risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, lack of physical activity, poor dietary habits, smoking and excess alcohol drinking can greatly increase one’s risk of heart disease. Genetics and age may also have an effect on the likelihood of heart disease. Nevertheless, having risk factors does not necessarily imply that heart disease is inevitable.
One way to promote good heart health/conditions is to eat a healthy diet. One can achieve a good cardiovascular condition through the adoption of a balanced diet with fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, among other beneficial foods. On the other hand, one should avoid taking foods with too much salt, unhealthy fats, sugars, among other processed foods. Too much salt in food leads to high blood pressure, which is a major cause of heart diseases and stroke. While avoiding some foods can help one in having a good heart, the best thing is adopting healthy eating habits that help one meet the body’s nutritional needs. This includes making small changes in one’s daily eating habits such as eating more fruits and vegetables and avoiding salty foods.

Physical exercise is yet another essential aspect when it comes to having a healthy heart. The role of physical exercise is to enhance cardiovascular fitness, body weight and overall health, both mental and physical. Examples of exercises include walking, cycling, swimming, jogging, dancing and playing sports. Physical activity does not necessarily have to entail vigorous workouts. Simple exercises like walking to destinations within a reasonable distance, climbing stairs instead of using lifts, engaging in activities at home or just standing up from time to time may be enough to keep someone physically active.
It is equally important to avoid tobacco to keep one’s heart healthy. Smoking can lead to the damage of blood vessels and increase chances of getting heart attack, stroke and other heart diseases. Even the exposure to second-hand smoke is dangerous to the cardiovascular system. One of the best things that a person can do in order to maintain good health and lower the risks of developing heart problems is to stop smoking. The World Heart Day can help to remind the smokers of all the advantages of stopping smoking.
It is also essential that people realize the importance of conducting health check-ups from time to time. Disorders like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes do not have any symptoms in the initial stages, which means that a person might be at considerable risk without being aware of it. Conducting regular health check-ups through which people can check their blood pressure, blood sugar level and body weight and find out whether there are some risks involved. It will help people to take proper action before it becomes too late.
Mental wellness is another aspect which cannot be overlooked in the context of heart wellness. Chronic stress, insomnia and unhealthy coping mechanisms can affect an individual’s mental wellness adversely. It can be ensured by ensuring that a person maintains a healthy balance in his/her life between working, studying, family, socializing, relaxing and recreational pursuits. It helps one to lead a healthy life in all possible aspects.
But World Heart Day is not limited to individual responsibility. There is a need for governments, healthcare organizations, schools, work places, communities and organizations to promote heart health. It can be done through education at school level on good nutrition and exercises, encouragement of better lifestyle at the workplace and screening and awareness campaigns by the healthcare organizations. The government can help through policies promoting healthy food choices, physical activities, tobacco prevention and healthcare. Making healthy options easy for people leads to adoption of those options.
The essence of World Heart Day is particularly significant because it relates to the health of the heart, which is pertinent to every individual. The problem of heart diseases is usually related to the aging population, yet the unhealthy lifestyle can be formed when one is very young and may lead to health issues in the future years of life. This means that both kids, teenagers, adults and seniors need to know how to maintain cardiovascular health.
In conclusion, World Heart Day is a reminder that our hearts must always be protected. This does not have to only happen on one day of the year but rather must form an integral part of our daily routines. Proper nutrition, exercise, quitting smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, dealing with stress, sufficient rest, checking our health markers and seeking proper health advice where necessary are just some of the things that can be done by everyone. A healthy heart guarantees us a healthy and active life so that we can spend more time with our families, reach our goals and contribute positively to society.
