World Intellectual Property Day is celebrated annually on April 26, and events organized on that day inform us about the role of intellectual property rights in encouraging innovation and creativity. Intellectual property, or IP, refers to creations of the mind, such as inventions, literary and artistic works, designs, and symbols, names, and images used in commerce. These are safeguarded by legislation through patents, copyrights, trademarks, and various other methods to ensure that creators gain acknowledgment and financial rewards for their inventions or works.
In 2000, WIPO’s member nations designated April 26 as World IP Day to enhance general consciousness about intellectual property. Importantly, the WIPO convention came into effect on this date in 1970. Since then, this event has evolved into a worldwide public awareness initiative that encourages everyone to recognize how the safeguarding of intellectual property advantages society. Each year, WIPO selects a theme that highlights a particular facet of intellectual property and its influence on society.
In 2025, the theme will be “IP and Music: Feel the Beat of IP,” which emphasizes the music industry as a universal language that resonates with our emotions. Music is not merely about catchy rhythms, it is also a domain where the protection of creative works is crucial. From songwriters and composers to record labels and streaming platforms, IP rights ensure that those who produce music receive the acknowledgement and compensation they rightly deserve. Previous themes have ranged from honoring digital creativity to focusing on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), underscoring that intellectual property encompasses not just legal safeguards but also the promotion of innovation for a brighter future.
