World Mental Health Day – 10th Oct

World Mental Health Day is commemorated each year on 10 October, and its main aim is to create awareness about mental health problems and increase knowledge and care for people with such conditions. World Mental Health Day is an excellent chance to emphasize the significance of mental health in general because people must pay equal attention to mental and physical health.

Mental health affects thinking, emotions, behavior, interpersonal relations, problem-solving, decision-making, and many other aspects of our lives. Our mental state constantly changes at different stages of life. Various factors including academic pressure, work stress, financial troubles, relationships, social norms, major life events impact our emotional state. Stress, sadness, anxiety, or loneliness do not make us weak. This is a normal condition, and the right kind of help may significantly change things.

Among the primary objectives of the observance of World Mental Health Day is the elimination of the associated stigma. The negative stereotypes and attitudes can make one refrain from talking about one’s problems and visiting specialists. A person might have a fear of being misjudged and treated differently if he or she discusses mental health. This issue can be solved through fostering an atmosphere in which one feels comfortable speaking about his or her emotions. One needs to feel comfortable enough to talk about mental health as he or she would do regarding physical health.

In order to maintain good mental well-being, one needs to follow some basic practices. Balancing academic or work-related obligations with personal life, getting enough sleep, exercising, maintaining social contacts, taking rests, and engaging in meaningful activities are among them. However, self-help might not be effective in some cases when the problems remain persistent and start to influence everyday life. Therefore, one should seek professional support.

The support of family members, friends, colleagues, teachers, and the community will also go a long way in helping. At times, all a person needs is for someone to sit down and just listen to him/her. It is more helpful to encourage an individual than saying “just be positive” whenever the individual tries to air out his/her feelings.

Therefore, it is evident that there is much more that we should do beyond our individual duties on World Mental Health Day. Educational institutions, work places, health organizations, families, and communities should all be involved in ensuring that individuals maintain good mental health within a safe environment.

On this World Mental Health Day, let us all strive to listen without judging, speak kindly, support people around us who are suffering, and take good care of our mental health. It is only through the respect and appreciation of mental health that a better society can be achieved.
