To celebrate everyone’s favorite hazelnut chocolate spread which indulges the taste buds February 5th has officially been deemed World Nutella Day. Nutella is a sweetened hazelnut spread that is manufactured by the Italian company Ferrero. World Nutella Day is not just about savoring this creamy spread, it’s a global gathering of Nutella enthusiasts who share their passion for all things Nutella.
During the 1940s the ongoing world war caused the chocolate prices to skyrocket because of the scarcity of cocoa. So, Pietro Ferrero, who owned a bakery in Alba, Italy, decided to use hazelnut to stretch his chocolate supply. This product was named Pasta Gianduja. However, in 1951 he decided to make a creamy version of it and named it Supercreama. When Pietro’s son Michelle decided to ramp up the production, he slightly changed the recipe and renamed it as Nutella. The first jar of Nutella was sold in 1964 and was an instant hit. Nutella was considered as a form of hotcake, and it has been a delightfully popular treat throughout Europe ever since. Nutella got this catchy name from the English noun ‘Nut’ and the Italian suffix -ella, a vezzeggiativo which is an alteration of the noun expression affection.
World Nutella Day was created by the American food blogger Sara Russo in 2007, who fell in love with the sweet treat while living in Italy. In 2015, Sara transferred World Nutella Day to Ferrero so that it could live on and grow for years. It has since become a global phenomenon, celebrated around the world each year with recipes, contests, and other fun activities dedicated to this yummy treat.
