Imagine incredible adventure coupled with fascinating scenery that looks like they’ve escaped from a gorgeous painting. In short, that’s what Sri Lanka is all about especially for an avid hiker like Nalin. Aged 22, currently a 3rd year undergraduate studying in the University of Colombo, with an undying love for trekking nature’s paths which are marveled at by many, Nalin has already made it to more than 20 hiking destinations in the island. Being the typical lazy potato, I was naturally impressed by this feat and decided to pen his experience along with a wee bit of fact-finding about these breathtakingly beautiful hiking trails nestled in our paradise isle!

1. Adara Kanda / Paraviyangala Kanda
(සබරගමුවේ ආදරවන්තයන්ගේ කන්ද)
With an elevation of approximately 1500m, Adara Kanda (Lovers’ Peak) which is part of the Kalupahana mountain range in Belihuloya is located in the Rathnapura District. From atop the mountain you can witness Ridee Mudun Poththa, Hawagala, Samanalawewa Resevoir and the Non Perail Estate etc.
You’ve to walk past Pambahinna Junction for a few metres, turn to a small lane on to your left and journey till you come across a Monastery known as Niyadagala located under a huge solid rock which is where the uphill trek actually begins! Stretches of Pine trees, small water streams and “Maana” patches (Ceylon Citronella grass) will meet you very often till you get to the top with heavenly panoramic views and the strong wind!
Nalin: “පරවියන්ගල කන්ද නැත්නම් ආදර කන්ද පිහිටලා තියෙන්නේ සබරගමුව පළාතේ university එකට නුදුරින්මයි. පරවියන්ගලට ආදර කන්ද කියල නම වැටෙන්නත් සබරගමුව කැම්පස් එක හේතුවක්. අලුත් batch එක ඇවිත් ටික දවසකට පස්සෙ සීනීයර්ස්ලා අලුත් අය මේ කන්ද නගින්න යොමු කරනවා . තමන්ගෙ batch එකේම හිත ගත්තු ගෑනු ළමෙයක් ඉන්න පිරිමි ළමෙයක් මේ කඳු තරණය තමාගේ අදහස් තේරුම් කරදීමට හොඳ අවස්ථාවක්. බොහෝ වෙලාවට මේ දුශ්කර කඳු තරණයට සහය වෙලා කන්දෙන් බහින්නෙ ආදරවන්තයෝ වෙලා කියන එක ප්‍රසිද්ධ කතාවක්. ඒ නිසාම ආදර කන්ද කියන නම පරවියන්ගලට වඩාත් උචිත වී ඇත.මේ කන්ද අවට හාවගල , රිදී මුදුන් පොත්ත, පබහින්න කන්ද ආදී වශයෙන් තවත් කදු පන්තීන් පිහිටා ඇත.”

2. Hanthana Mountain Range
This mountain range with seven main summits, located in the Kandy District is yet another hiking hotspot especially among university students from the University of Peradeniya and even the University of Colombo too. Ura Kanda being the highest out of the seven has an elevation of approximately 3800m.
There are two alternative starting points, one from the University of Peradeniya and the other from the “Hanthana 4th Mile Post.” Reaching the first 2 peaks can be done without much hassle and even if you don’t make it to all the 7 peaks, scrambling up as far as you can, will surely reward you with two things. 1. Spectacular scenic stretches along the trail 2. Gorgeous views of the Kandy city, Knuckles range, Dolosbage range and the Sabaragamuwa hills.

3. Algama
Located in the Kegalle District, Algama has become a popular hiking destination owing to the fact that it offers an adventure packed exciting up-hill trek amidst the splendour of pure wilderness, not too far from Colombo. The best way to experience the Algama hike is to sign up for one of the many packages offered by “Sri Craft Village” and they’ll surely take care of the rest of your adventure!
Very often, the trail will introduce you to a few caves, peaks, fresh stretches of water winding its way through mossy rocks wildly scattered all over and dangling creepers entangled in the branches of the trees on either sides. On your way you’ll also get to see a white narrow cascade standing at a height of about 6 meters – The Algama waterfall also known as the Uduwaka falls. Surrounded by tranquillity and pure natural beauty, the fall ends up in a pool of cool water which has become a “must try out” bathing spot for all trekkers.
Nalin: “කදු නගින එකයි, කූඩාරමක රැයක් ගත කරන එකයි දැන් හැමෝම අතර ජනප්‍රිය දෙයක් වෙලා. ඒත් ඉතින් ගොඩක් අයට මේක කරන්න අමාරුයි මොකද ළඟපාත මෙහෙම අත්දැකීමක් ලබාගන්න තියෙන තැන් අඩු නිසා. SRI CRAFT VILLAGE කියන්නේ කොළඹට 50KM වගේ දුරකින් තියෙන camping site එකක්. ඉතින් මෙතෙන්ට එන අයට කන්ද උඩ camping කරලා දිය ඇල්ලකින් සීතල වතුර ටිකක් නාලා පොල් රොටී එක්ක BBQ කාලා කවදාවත් අමතක නොවෙන අත්දැකීමක් අරගෙන යන්න පුළුවන්. මෙතෙන camping විතරක් නෙවේ day outings වලටත් ගැලපෙන හොඳම තැනක්. ඔබගේ ගමන් වියදමයි, කාලයයි දෙකම ඉතුරැ කරන් නාගරික පරිසරයෙන් පොඩ්ඩක් මිදිලා ගහකොල ඇල දොල එක්ක සමීපව කාලය ගත කරලා යන්න මේක සුදුසුම තැනක්.”

4. Pink/Rose Quartz Mountain Range
This mountain range with its 7 peaks is the largest of its kind in South Asia and to discover this nature’s treasure located in the Anuradhapura District, one will have to stroll through the “Jathika Namal Uyana” – An ironwood tree forest which apparently is the largest in Sri Lanka and the largest replanted ironwood forest in Asia, naturally making it a National Heritage site.
There’s a Buddha statue on one of the mountain peaks overlooking the forest reserve which is believed to have been a human sanctuary in the past even for criminals. Besides, there’s an amusing story to say that this reserve is the result of the punishments given to such criminals who were forced to plant them long time back!

5. Idalagashinna Railway Hike
Station No. 68 on the upcountry railway line – Idalagashinna, is located in between Haputale and Ohiya in the Badulla district at an elevation of approximately 1615m, second only to the Pattipola railway station which is located at the highest height out of all. In short, this serene hike is all about encountering hills and valleys, eucalyptus and pine, mesmerizing misty skies and the old charm of 13 tunnels between the railways stations of Ohiya and Idalagashinna. (In fact, that’s the highest number of tunnels between two railway stations.)
Nalin: ලංකාවේ ලස්සනම දුම්රිය ස්ථානය මොකක්ද කියලා ඇහුවොත් මම නම් ඉදල්ගස්හින්න දුම්රිය ස්ථානය කියලා කියන්න දෙපාරක් හිතන්නේ නෑ.. මම තුන් වතාවකට වඩා ගිහින් තියනවා. කොච්චර ගියත් ඇති වෙන්නේ නම් නෑ.
කඳු අතර පිහිටා ඇති මේ දුම්රිය ස්ථානය ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ පිහිටා ඇති සුන්දරම දුම්රිය ස්ථාන කිහිපයෙන් ප්‍රමුඛ ස්ථානයක් ගනී.
තවද, Travel Forces කණ්ඩායමට අනුව, ලංකාවේ දුම්රිය ස්ථාන අතරින් දුම්රියෙන් හැරෙන්නට වෙනත් වාහනයකින් පහසුවෙන් ලගා විය නොහැකි දුම්රිය ස්ථානයක් ලෙස ඉදල්ගස්හින්න දුම්රිය ස්ථානය හැඳින්වේ.

ඔහිය සිට ඉදල්ගස්හින්න අතර rail hike එකත් ඉදල්ගස්හින්න කන්ද නැගීමත් සංචාරකයින් අතර වඩාත් ප්‍රසිද්ධ වී ඇත්තේ මේ ප්‍රදේශයටම ආවේණික වූ ක්ෂණිකව වෙනස් වන කාලගුණික තත්වය නිසාවෙනි. සිත් ඇදගන්නා සුලු පරිසරයක් නිර්මානය වීමට ප්‍රධාන හේතුව ද එයයි. පැහැදිලි අහස සහ කාලගුණයක් සහිත දිනයක නම් ඉදල්ගස්හින්න දුම්රිය ස්ථානයේ එක් පසකින් ඈතින් මාතර පැත්තෙන් මුහුද පවා දැකගැනීමට හැකිවීම ආශ්චර්යයට කරැණකි.
දවසින් වැඩි හරියක් මීදුමින් වැසී පවතින මේ දුම්රිය ස්ථානය නැරඹීමට බොහෝ දෙනා ප්‍රිය කරන අතර, ඉදල්ගස්හින්න කන්ද ඉතා පහසුවෙන් නැගිය හැකි කන්දක් නිසා කාන්තා කදුනගින්නන් අතරද ප්‍රමුඛ ස්ථානයක් ගනී.
